The Story Behind Reflections
Peter Abraham-Orejuela
Founder & Co-Author
Peter was the kid who was always getting in trouble.
He got kicked out of multiple schools growing up. He acted out. He fought. He pushed limits. Many people probably looked at him and assumed he was just another bad kid.
But the truth was more complicated than that.
He was raised by a single mother who was doing the best she could while also caring for his severely disabled sister. His sister was born with Down syndrome and suffered complications during birth that left her without oxygen for a period of time. Today, she is 47 years old, but cognitively functions much like a young child.
His mom loved him deeply. Looking back, he realized she was simply trying to survive. She didn’t really know how to help a boy who was angry, confused, and acting out.
When he got in trouble, sometimes he got yelled at. Sometimes he got hit. Sometimes nothing really happened at all.
What was missing were the conversations. Nobody ever sat him down and asked: What were you feeling? Why did this happen? What could you have done differently? What kind of man do you want to become?
Years later, he became an attorney. He was thinking about becoming a father. And he started asking himself, “If I had a son, what are the non-negotiables?”
Boxing. Chess. A musical instrument. A team sport. Discipline. Confidence. Emotional control.
Then journaling kept coming up.
At first, he laughed. Journaling?
But then he realized reflection is one of the things he had been missing as a kid.
So he started building the thing he wished someone had handed him when he was that kid.
A guided reflection journal designed to help parents and children work through life’s challenges together.
Not as punishment. As a conversation.
Because sometimes the most powerful thing a child can hear is:
“Let’s talk about what happened.”
Anthony “TJ” Oyatayo
Creative Director & Co-Author
As a father of two, Anthony has seen firsthand how quickly life moves. Between school, activities, work, and daily routines, some of the most important conversations can easily be overlooked.
He believes every child has a story worth telling and that meaningful conversations often begin with a single question:
“How are you feeling today?”
Drawing from his background in leadership, design, and creative problem-solving, Anthony helped shape Reflections into an experience that is both thoughtful and approachable for both children and parents alike.
His hope is that every child who opens Reflections is reminded that their voice matters, their feelings matter, and their story deserves to be heard.
